A Practical Overview of Supported Decision-Making and Guardianship

Details: Explore the spectrum of decision-making support available to individuals who may need additional assistance in decision-making.  Participants will gain a deeper understanding of supported decision-making (SDM) and guardianship.  We’ll examine how each approach can empower individuals while ensuring their rights and needs are respected.

  • Individualized care for people under guardianship assures informed decision-making

  • Combining restricted guardianship with supported-decision-making supports can lessen restriction of rights for some individuals, helping them retain as much autonomy as possible.

  • Supported decision-making can help some individuals retain decision-making rights when appropriate supports are in place.

Presenter: Katie Hestness brings over 11 years of experience in guardianship through her work at Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota, where she continues to serve.  For six of those years, she held a supervisory role, leading a team of guardians.  Currently, Katie serves as the Education Navigator for Supported Decision-Making, guiding individuals and professionals through alternatives to guardianship.  She is a National Certified Guardian and has been a board member of the Minnesota Association of Guardianship and Conservatorship (MAGiC) for the past five years.
