Micaela Schuneman, Esq. Appointed CEO of Southern MN Regional Legal Services (SMRLS)
On October 1st, Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services (SMRLS) announced the appointment of Micaela Schuneman, Esq., as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective October 13, 2025.
Schuneman brings a dynamic vision and deep commitment to justice that aligns with SMRLS’s mission to ensure equal access to legal representation. With over a decade of leadership in legal advocacy and public service, Schuneman’s appointment marks a new chapter for SMRLS and its ongoing efforts to expand services, strengthen community partnerships, and develop service delivery innovations across southern Minnesota.
“Micaela is a proven leader with a passion for social justice and a track record of empowering underserved communities,” said Brett Olander, President of the SMRLS Board of Directors. “Her leadership, strategic mindset, communication style, and collaborative spirit make her the ideal choice to lead SMRLS into the future.”
Schuneman most recently served as Senior Director of Immigration and Refugee Services at the International Institute of Minnesota and previously as Deputy Director of Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid. She succeeds Jessie R. Nicholson, Esq., who recently retired after 40 years of dedicated service.
“I am excited to join the incredible team of lawyers, social workers, and support staff at SMRLS, Schuneman said. “I am deeply committed to ensuring that all community members have access to legal advice and representation, and the breadth of services and geographic diversity of SMRLS’ reach is significant. Having grown up in rural communities, I understand how important it is to know that there are people in your community who are walking alongside you as you face life’s challenges. I also know from my grandparents’ immigrant journey that competent legal representation makes an impact that transcends generations.”
