Child Support: A View from the Bench (Applying for 1.5 standard credits)
Child Support Magistrates Jennifer Knutson and Tim Tinglestad will share their insights on best practices in child support cases. You will hear about necessary language in custody/parenting time orders, look back periods, advising pro se litigants, and other case preparation tips. Ethics for the Pro Bono Attorney (Applying for 1.5 ethics credits)
Susan Humiston, Director of the Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility, will address key ethics topics of interest to lawyers who serve clients in poverty. All clients can be challenging, but poverty and the debilitating impacts of mental health and substance use issues sometimes associated with it can make representation particularly challenging. This 1.5 hour session will address the challenges of representing clients with diminished decision-making capabilities and how to do so ethically and competently. This interactive session will also address how to handle situations where your client may be under the influence or is being less than truthful. What can and should you do short of withdrawal to assist some of our most challenging clients

Medical Assistance Basics Including General Guidelines Regarding Treatment of Trusts (Applying for 2.0 standard CLE credits)
Experienced Elder Law Attorneys Amber Hildebrandt and Julian Zweber will discuss basic medical assistance concepts that every legal aid pro bono attorney might need to know. Written materials will include basic eligibility guidelines, estate recovery practices and procedures, and treatment of support or special needs trusts. Ms. Hildebrandt and Mr. Zweber will offer practice tips for advising and assisting low income, low asset and wealthier clients. They will welcome your questions regarding medical assistance or other elder law topics.

CLE:  3.5 Standard hours and 1.5 Ethics hours of MN CLE credit will be applied for.
