On-Demand - Cross Cultural Mental Health Issues

On-Demand - Cross Cultural Mental Health Issues

Cross Cultural Mental Health Issues will help attorneys and advocates better understand how their clients from other cultures experience and talk about mental health problems. The panelists will discuss their observations of cultural barriers between western mental health practice and the Karen, Somali and Hmong communities in particular. They will discuss strategies for effectively talking with clients about mental health, how and why clients describe their diagnosis and symptoms, and the socio-cultural factors that affect clients’ willingness to discuss mental health. The panel will help attorneys better explain and contextualize their clients’ mental health problems for adjudicators in settings where mental health is a factor, like social security disability and immigration, among others.
