Legal Aid Attorneys Face Challenges in Federal Immigration Hearings

MMLA Among Those Pursuing Asylum for Young People Fleeing Violence

Priya Premo and Laura Wilson, immigration staff attorneys with Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid, are two of a growing number of lawyers stepping up to represent undocumented children seeking asylum and other types of immigration benefits in the United States. In a recent MPR News article, Premo and Wilson discuss tight deadlines,  courts reluctant to grant asylum, and their frustrating, but rewarding, efforts for young clients.

"With these kids, it's like we have to get their story the first or second time that we meet or there's not enough time," Wilson said. "The types of violence that these kids are being subjected to are very similar to the violence that people around the world who are recognized as refugees have experienced." Read more at MPR News.
