Staff Attorneys - Minneapolis (posted 4/15)

Central Minnesota Legal Services:   Two Staff Attorney positions available full time for its Minneapolis office.

Responsibilities:  The staff attorney positions involves service work in the areas of family law, and government benefits with an emphasis on family law. The staff attorney may also be assigned work on special projects involving ex-offenders, veterans and non-custodial fathers.  The office has a commitment to service work, including litigation, community legal education and community outreach, as appropriate to client needs.   Travel may be required throughout the 21 counties served by the CMLS offices in central Minnesota. 

Background:  CMLS is a 3-office program with 20 employees, providing free legal representation to low-income clients in 21 counties in central Minnesota.  These position will be located in the Minneapolis office but may require travel throughout the 21 counties served by CMLS.  The mission of Central Minnesota Legal Services is to advocate for access to the civil justice system for low income people by providing high quality legal services and to improve the lives of people living in poverty by empowering self-advocacy skills through legal education.

CMLS has a current budget of $2.2 million.  It is funded primarily by a grant from the Legal Services Corporation.  CMLS also has other funding sources to provide civil legal services to other low income populations in its 21 county service area.   CMLS enjoys a good rapport with, and strong support, from the organized bar and the local judiciary. 

Qualifications:  Demonstrated commitment and sensitivity to the problems of low income and vulnerable persons. Post-law school poverty law experiences a plus.   Prior experience a plus but will train.   New grads considered.   Candidates should be licensed to practice law in Minnesota.    Out of state admitted attorney with 18 months employment in a poverty law office can get temporary pre-exam admission.   Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle required.  Ability to speak Spanish/Somali a plus.

Salary:  D.O.E.  pursuant to the CMLS salary schedule.  Experience preferred. Excellent benefits.

Starting Date:  As close to June 1, 2014 as possible.
